Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about Dusky.
How it works
Will interviewers see Dusky during screen share?
No. Dusky uses system-level APIs to stay invisible during screen sharing on Zoom, Meet, Teams, and other platforms. Only you can see the Dusky window. This works because we register as a "screen share excluded" window at the OS level.
Which platforms does Dusky work with?
Dusky works with any video conferencing platform: Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Webex, Slack Huddles, and more. It runs as a separate desktop app alongside your meeting, so it's platform-agnostic.
What is Think Deeper mode?
Think Deeper mode uses extended AI reasoning (up to 60 seconds) for complex questions like system design, architecture trade-offs, and multi-step problems. Activate it with Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + Enter when you need a more thorough response.
How fast is the transcription?
Transcription appears in near real-time (typically under 1 second delay). We use streaming speech-to-text that processes audio as it comes in.
Does Dusky work with phone interviews?
Dusky captures audio from your system. For phone interviews, you can use speakerphone or route your phone audio through your computer. For best results, use video calls where audio is already on your computer.
Privacy & data
Where is my data stored?
Audio is streamed to our transcription service and discarded immediately after processing. Transcripts and AI responses are stored only on your device. We never store your interview content on our servers.
What permissions does Dusky need?
Screen recording permission (to stay off screen share) and microphone access (for live transcription). Both are standard macOS/Windows permissions you control. You can revoke them anytime in System Settings.
Can I delete my local history?
Yes. All session data is stored locally on your device. You can clear your history anytime from the app settings, or simply delete the app data folder.
Do you share my data with third parties?
We use AI providers (like OpenAI) for transcription and suggestions. Audio and text are processed in real-time and not retained by these providers for training. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Is my data encrypted?
Yes. All data in transit is encrypted using TLS 1.3. Local data on your device uses your operating system's standard file encryption.
Pricing & billing
How does the free trial work?
Download and use Dusky for 15 minutes free. No credit card required. All features are available during the trial so you can test everything before purchasing.
What's the difference between passes and subscriptions?
Passes (Weekly, Job Hunt) are one-time purchases that expire after their duration. The Pro subscription renews monthly until you cancel. Choose passes for temporary interview bursts, Pro for ongoing use.
Can I cancel my subscription?
Pro Monthly subscribers can cancel anytime from their account settings. Your access continues until the end of your current billing period. No questions asked.
Do you offer refunds?
All sales are final. We don't offer refunds, which is why we provide a free trial so you can test Dusky before purchasing.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept all major credit cards through Stripe. We don't currently support PayPal or cryptocurrency.
Technical
What are the system requirements?
macOS 12+ (Monterey or later) on Apple Silicon or Intel. Windows 10/11 (64-bit) with 4GB RAM minimum. A stable internet connection is required for transcription.
Is Dusky signed and notarized?
Yes. The macOS app is code-signed and notarized by Apple. The Windows app is signed with an EV certificate. Both pass standard security checks.
Does Dusky work offline?
No. Dusky requires an internet connection for transcription and AI features. Local history is viewable offline, but live features need connectivity.
Why does the app need screen recording permission?
Screen recording permission is required by macOS to register as a "screen share excluded" window. We don't actually record your screen - we just need the permission for the invisibility feature.
Support
How do I get support?
Email us at support@dusky.app. We typically respond within 24 hours on business days.
Dusky isn't staying invisible during screen share. Help!
Make sure you've granted screen recording permission in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording. Restart Dusky after granting permission. Some older Zoom versions may need to be updated.
The transcription quality is poor. What can I do?
Ensure your microphone is set correctly in the app. Use a headset or external microphone for best results. Background noise and multiple speakers can affect accuracy.
